Wer von einem Fachbuch über Ökologie eine langweilige, trockene Lektüre erwartet, wird von diesem Buch angenehm überrascht sein. Colinvaux erklärt in anschaulichen, für jedermann leicht verständlichen und oft witzigen Worten warum die Natur so ist, wie sie ist und nicht anders. Viele seiner Ausführungen mögen im Lichte der eigenen täglichen Erfahrungen und landläufigen Meinungen zunächst kontrovers, absurd und fragwürdig erscheinen, doch es gelingt ihm immer wieder, seine Theorien auf so unumstößliche Fakten wie Physik und Mathematik zu stellen.
Einige der Darstellungen sind zwar inzwischen, geschuldet dem Alter des Buches, tatsächlich überholt, besonders Teile des letzten Kapitels "The People's Place", sind von den Ereignissen der Weltgeschichte inzwischen über den Haufen geworfen worden. Nichtsdestotrotz zieht sich ein solider roter Faden durch das gesamte Werk. |
